Lucio Perez is respected member of our community, a dedicated father, a hard worker, and a man of deep faith. He has been in the United States for almost 20 years, after fleeing violence and poverty in Guatemala. He and his wife (who is documented) have three young U.S.-born children. He has no criminal record and has been keeping required appointments with ICE for years. Suddenly in the fall of 2017, ICE decided to deport him. He has come into Sanctuary at First Church Amherst, while he pursues legal efforts to be granted permission to stay in the US and not be separated from his family.

Lucio was working a steady job and a major breadwinner for his family. His family is in need of ongoing funds to replace that income. The church has installed a portable shower, changed locks, is incurring increased utility costs, etc. Currently food donations are ample, but there are other expenses that arise as we seek to welcome Lucio and support his family.

Donations are being processed through the First Church Amherst and are tax deductible. Decisions about disbursements are made by the Sanctuary Fund Committee composed of representatives from First Church Amherst, the Pioneer Valley Workers’ Center and the broader community.
